How polling rate converts to latency
A mouse polling at 1000 Hz reports its position 1000 times per second — once every millisecond. The report interval is simply:
interval (ms) = 1000 ÷ polling rate (Hz) Common polling rates compared
- 125 Hz — 8 ms interval. Noticeable input delay; avoid for gaming.
- 500 Hz — 2 ms. Playable, but dated.
- 1000 Hz — 1 ms. The long-standing competitive standard.
- 2000 Hz — 0.5 ms.
- 4000 Hz — 0.25 ms.
- 8000 Hz — 0.125 ms. Diminishing returns; needs a strong CPU.
Things to know before maxing out your polling rate
- CPU cost scales with rate. 8000 Hz generates eight times the interrupts of 1000 Hz — on weaker systems it can cause stutter in CPU-bound games.
- Sensor quality matters. Some mice only deliver stable high polling at certain DPI levels; erratic polling is worse than a lower, steady rate.
- Polling rate is not DPI. Polling rate is how often the mouse talks; DPI is how much it has to say. They tune independently.
